Investigators Begin Identifying Men Suspected of Assaulting Disabled Women

Los Angeles Disabled Women Rape Lawyers

In January 2011, reports of some of the most horrendous acts of sexual abuse on disabled women ever reported made news headlines across the country. The news came about nine months after an unknown person dropped off 11 DVDS at the Los Angeles Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau in Monterey Park. The tapes contained more than 100 hours of footage of severely disabled women being raped. According to the Washington Post, the videos came from an anonymous tipster who left a note with the videos indicating a customer purchased a laptop on the streets of Inglewood and brought it to him to wipe the hard drive. Before doing so, he copied the videos and gave them to authorities.

In the months that followed, sheriff's detectives began the arduous task of digitally enhancing the tape in efforts to identify the at least eight men shown in the tapes assaulting at least 10 different women. Many of the victims were severely disabled, and some were even in diapers.  The video included what appeared to surveillance tape recordings, as well as video that appear to be shot on a handheld camcorder. According to authorities, some of the attacks were forceful, with no consent from the victims, who were truly defenseless.

Hopefully, more information will be available as investigators learn more about the acts, including the names of the alleged perpetrators and the locations where these acts occurred. Assaults and sexual abuse such as the major case currently under investigation by the LA County Sheriff's Department are disheartening and disturbing. The victims, already vulnerable and unable to care for themselves, are reportedly forced to endure horrific sexual acts at the hands of those hired to care for them.

Financial Accountable for Victims of Negligent Supervision

After learning of horrific abuse such as the abuse the victims at the subject of the LA County Sheriff's investigation endured, it is understandable that victims and their families may feel confused, angry, and helpless. However, the perpetrators themselves may not be the only ones responsible for these horrific acts. The agency that hired these criminal caregivers may be liable, as well as the care facility that employed them. While corporations and agencies that turn a blind eye cannot serve jail time, they can be held financial accountable for negligently supervising or hiring their employees.
